Dreams, Hopes and The Path to Truth

by June Michael

Recently, I had the opportunity to be the guest speaker at Unity in the Nation's Capital. I gave a two-part lecture on achieving your dreams. I, specifically, chose this topic because I wanted to share with the congregation my experience in fulfilling a life long dream to become a writer and how this dream was now materializing with the forthcoming publication of my book, The Path to Truth: A Spiritual Guide to Higher Consciousness. The response to the two lectures was overwhelming. Many of the members of Unity have requested that I give them the written versions of those two lectures. So, here is a concise version of them.

Two Sundays ago, I spoke about my dream to become a writer and shared with you my experiences in obtaining that goal. I talked about how our dreams are divine gifts from God and what we do with them are our gifts back to God. Mary Manin Morrissey in Building Your Fields of Dreams says that, "Dreams and desires pull at us, tug at us, and will not leave us alone because we came here not to live a cramped, limited life but to fully and freely express that in ourselves which is divine. True desire, not just self-centered interest, comes from God." Do you have a dream or desire? Let me share with you how to make your dream come true.

If you want to succeed, you have to prepare. You have to put the Law of Consciousness into action. For example, when I started writing The Path to Truth, I thought that I could just sit at the computer and start writing. But, I found out that my coach, God, had other plans for me. I was led to study the great esoteric literature and teachings, world religions, psychology, metaphysical principles and practices, the angelic hierarchy and other disciplines. My consciousness was expanded to the greater truths of the universe. The real preparation came with living the Truth Principles I was writing about. They were not just words on a page, but energy that required that I know how to work with it. The Path to Truth helped me build a consciousness for what I wanted.

Building a consciousness for what you desire is the key ingredient for success. You have to plant seeds of success by always thinking positively about your dream. Love your dream. Your thoughts materialize as matter, so you have to believe it -love it---in order to achieve it. Secondly, never, never give up! You have to go the whole nine yards to win. Just when you believe that you can't go any further, you have to dig your heels in and stick to your dream. The only time you can throw in the towel is when you don't have the passion or the energy to pursue it anymore. In other words, the love is gone for it and you have moved on to other dreams and paths.

Many of us do not pursue our dreams because we are scared of failure or success. Failure represents rejection, hurt and disappointment. But hidden in every disappointment, rejection or hurt is an opportunity for our spiritual growth. Learn how to take lemons and make lemonade. Others fear being successful because they fear being joyful. Marianne Williamson in A Woman's Worth says, "We're unconsciously afraid of a reaction against us if we dare to shine fully, embrace joy, and permit ourselves to have too great a life." So, we stay stuck in daydreaming of possible successes instead of living our dream. We are scared to grow and change. It's ok to come out of our self-imposed limitations and set records for others to follow. Need help in doing this? Read Face the Fear and Do It Anyway by Dr. Susan Jeffers. I guarantee you this book will help motivate you to do exactly what the title says.

Don't let obstacles stop you. Prepare for success by doing whatever is required that gives you the skill or talent you need to succeed. My biggest obstacle was time. How could I even think of writing a book when I was a single mom working a demanding job, caring for a baby with multiple birth defects and raising a teenage daughter? Where could I possibly fit something that required more of my time into my life? I wrote late at night, early in the morning, at lunchtime, and I gave up vacation times. Whenever, I felt overwhelmed, I remembered to take the problem and break it up into small pieces and do one at a time. But, what really kept me going was the universal law that there is no time, only divine order. Whenever I think about how it took me ten years to write a book, I realize that God knows the right time for every creation.

When you need encouragement, turn to God. God will see you through. Friends and family mean well, most of the time, but they don't always buy into your dream like you do. So, don't let others destroy your dream because it doesn't fit into their expectations for you. Constructive criticism is priceless, but condemnation and judgement can destroy a dream. You no longer have to do what others want you to do or play by their rules. Instead you can spread your wings and fly and discover the spirit within.

It's About Time (Or is it?)

by Sam Byrom

"I don't have time."

 "When I get more time&ldots;"

"Really, I just didn't have time."

"You see, she has time to do that."

Sound familiar? The list goes on. How often do we find ourselves using these statements? Unfortunately, some of us use them and others akin to them quite often and with some degree of comfort. Fortunately, the good news is, none of them is true.

The world-renowned psychiatrist and metaphysician Deepak Chopra says that there is no such thing as time. There is only eternity. We, in our human consciousness, tend to "chop" it into little pieces: hours, minutes and seconds. Then we use it to our own convenience and to suit our own individual nature and prejudices. Looking at it from a perspective of Truth and Spirit (the only reality) which Chopra does, it is not "time", but our own choices that drive the course of our lives.

The next time you use one of the above or some other time statement just think about how you feel: guilty, put upon, cheated or inadequate? You may want to stop at the moment and rephrase your statement into something like, "I chose to" versus "instead of&ldots;."

We have the God-given, divine idea of free will to think, speak and do as we choose. And truthfully, that is exactly what we do all the time whether we realize it or not. Yes, even when we don't like the result of our actions. It was our choices that resulted in the action. It is simply the law of cause and effect.

For example, "Honey, did you pick up my dress from the cleaners today?" "No, dear, I didn't have time. Since, I started this new job, I just don't have time."

Time is not what's going on in the above drama. It is about choices. The truth is, the person did not get to the cleaners because he chose to do something else. Later, he might feel guilty that his mate is a bit upset about not having the dress she wanted to wear to the banquet that night. He needs to reevaluate his choices and put them in perspective, so that he won't feel guilty.

Whatever we think and whatever follows our thoughts are all matters of choice. We are free. That is, if we choose to claim our freedom. Moreover, Howard Thurman reminds us of our responsibility and choice to use our God given powers, such as will, to the fullest or let them lie dormant. When we choose to use our free will in a manner that fosters the outcome we desire our lives will be richer and more rewarding. When we choose not to, we fall into the trap of self-victimization.

Monitoring our thoughts and words about this element we call time, while putting it in a perspective of Truth and Spirit, is one of the many ways we can free ourselves from the clutches of bondage we often chose to embrace.
