Angel Corner
Y What
do Angels Look Like?
Like the little old lady who
returned your wallet
yesterday. Like
the
taxi driver who told
you that your eyes light
up the world, when you smile.
Like the small child who
showed you the wonder
in
simple things.
Like the poor man who
offered to share his
lunch with you. Like
the
rich man who showed
you that it really is
all possible, if only you
believe.
Like the stranger
who just happened to
come along, when you
had lost your way. Like
the friend who touched
your heart, when you
didn’t think you had
one to
touch. Angels
come in all sizes and
shapes, all ages and
skin types. Some with
freckles, some with
dimples, some with wrinkles,
some
without. They
come disguised
as friends,
enemies, teachers,
students, lovers and
fools.
They don’t take life too
seriously, they travel
light. They leave no
forwarding address,
they ask
nothing in return.
They wear sneakers
with
gossamer wings, they get
a deal on dry
cleaning.
They are hard to find
when your eyes are
closed, but they are
everywhere you look,
when you
choose to see.

Kudos
to Local Bookstores
June
Michael
Starting out as a new author is not easy,
especially if you don’t have a major publishing house behind you. It
is even more difficult if you are writing about a subject
such as Metaphysics. So, you have to decide early on in the game
to get smart and promote yourself if you want to get your book out
there. Your small local independent bookstores are first place to go.
They will support you. In fact, they are wonderful community resources
that we have to make sure don’t
get deleted by cyberspace.
Whether you are a writer or reader, I encourage you
to visit and support your local bookstores. Here are a few in my
hometown, Washington, DC, that sparkle like diamonds.
Sisterspace
and Books,
located at 1515 U Street, NW, is
not a metaphysical bookstore. But it is where I had my first professional book signing. Owned by two
African American women, Faye Williams and Cassandra Burton,
Sisterspace and Books promotes the writings of and about African
American women. They have a creative writing class that critiques your
work and encourages and inspires you to not give up on your creative
project. Besides the writing classes, they have other literary programs
and events. You can access their website at: www.sisterspaceandbooks.com.
Blue
Nile Bookstore
is located at 2828 Georgia
Avenue, NW, next door to the Blue Nile Herb store. It was serendipity
that I happened to find this wonderful little store. I was driving down
Georgia Avenue on my way to the Howard University bookstore when my
eyesight caught the beautiful blue color of the store name sign. I
immediately parked my car and went in to visit this store. I spent an
enjoyable afternoon conversing about metaphysics with one of the owners,
Brenda Williams. Two hours later I left with a bag full of crystals, posters, jewelry and books. For events
and classes
call Nadine Evans at 202-232-2583. See announcements for upcoming
classes at Blue Nile Books.
Inner
Visions Bookstore located in Silver Spring, Maryland is owned by Iyanla Vanzant, the
author of Acts of Faith and several other bestsellers. Iyanla
sponsor’s a New Authors Night program. Each author is given 20 minutes
to speak about his or her book and then afterwards participate in a book signing event. The evening I participated,
Iyanla gathered all the presenters in a separate room where she
led the group in a powerful prayer. She also gave a brief introduction
to the audience telling them about her days of selling books from the
back of her car. She encouraged all of us to keep writing and not to
stop at one book. You can access the programs and activities of Inner
Visions by visiting the website at www.innervisions.com
.
Earth,
Star Connection is located in the Georgetown area at
34th street NW. This is another exquisite
metaphysical
bookstore full of crystals, books, and other New Age paraphernalia. It
is a wonderful place to spend a Saturday afternoon. They have very
unique programs, and I specially like to recommend that you have a tarot
card reading done by Geraldine Amaral, the author of Tarot
Celebrations.

Tree
of Life Bookstore of Harlem
Kanya
Vashon McGhee
Twenty-eight
years ago I moved to New York City from Cleveland, Ohio in order to get
an underwriting commitment from Bache & Company for the Everyman
Mutual Fund. Founded by my father in 1966, it was the world’s first
mutual fund begun by an African-American.
To
make a long story short, I was indeed successful in securing an
underwriting agreement for the Fund only to fall victim to the market
crash of 1970 which decimated both the Everyman Fund and McGhee &
Co., our securities broker dealership similarly founded by my father in
1952.
Now
here’s where the fun began. I decided to take a year or so and
experiment with an old dream. A dream I had conceived while teaching
elementary school in California back in the early 60’s. It involved
gathering 2 or 3 copies of books I loved from my own private collection
and making them available to the citizens of New York City in a free
reading room on 125th and Lenox in Harlem to see if anyone
else would find them as interesting as I did. The books were also
available for sale.
What
made these books different was that they mainly consisted of books about
self-improvement and inner consciousness, like As a Man Thinketh,
Finding of the Third Eye and Back to Eden.
Imagine
my surprise when the year or two I had planned to give to this
experiment almost miraculously extended itself to 10 years . Soon we had
a store of 12,000 square feet with an average monthly patronage of more
than 15,000 persons from all over the world, of all races and creeds. We
called the bookstore, The Tree of Life.
The
building was unfortunately torn down in 1980 to make way for a hotel
convention center. It was never built and on that corner today is a
parking lot! We moved to Atlanta, Georgia where The Tree of Life
Bookstore of Harlem for the past 28 years continues to
successfully teach the principles of
meditation, nutrition and Spiritual Metaphysics programs.
When
I look back I realize how The Tree of Life bookstore influenced the
lives of many school drop-outs and drug abusers of the Harlem area. They
decided to read in our Aquarian Science Reading Room and get high off of
books instead of drugs. Because of the success in our education and drug
abuse program, we have extended our programs to include prison
rehabilitation and employment search. For additional information ,
please call 404-753-5700 or e-mail me at drkanya9@hotmail.com.

I
received many responses to the article, My Mission
in July 2001 issue. Here is one from Spain that I would like to
share with you.
Canary
Island Project
Jean
Ann Gilhead
My
mission is to create a new, Holistic-Creative Center on one of the
smaller powerful energy islands of the Canary Islands within the next
year. The Center will attract specialist /teachers from the world of the
healing arts, meditation, music, sculpture, writing, sound, color,
sacred geometry, geobiology, Feng Shui, etc., to share their
skills and to explore
deeper into their own unique abilities.
It will be a place where people can study all aspects of fine and subtle energy through holistic and
creative means. There will also be a deep interest in the study of
concepts of death and dying.
I am looking for like minded people and
benefactors to put money and energy into helping me make this project a
reality. If you feel that you could help me move this project forward,
in anyway, please contact me at +34 93-408 56 25 or e-mail me at fshjean@teleline.es
